Frequently asked questions and answers on the topics of application, rental agreement (contract), dormitories and furnishing.
Application:
Who can apply?
All trainees can apply, which means that if you have an apprenticeship contract or you will soon sign one, you can apply. Your employer or training company must be located in Hamburg. The apprenticeship must be recognized by the state, whether school or dual education. You must be at least 16 years old and not older than 26 years. If you are a minor, you can only live in our dormitory in Hamburg-Wandsbek. Students do not get any rooms with us, but can apply for a room at the Studierendenwerk: to the Studierendenwerk.
Which criteria are used for the allocation of rooms?
We assign the rooms according to social criteria, i.a. according to the current place of residence, the age of the applicant or the size of the training company.
When will I receive an answer after submitting my application?
We usually respond to applications within one week. You will either receive a rejection, the information that you are on the waiting list, or you will be included in the further procedure.
If I'm on the waiting list, will I get a confirmation or a cancellation later?
Unfortunately, we can’t comment on your chances of getting a spot. Since we have recorded your data, you will be on the waiting list and will be informed regularly by us.
My data changed in the course of the application (e.g. the training company has changed): what now?
For changes or corrections, the changed data must be sent promptly by email to zimmer@azubiwerk.de, so that we can enter these into our system. Important: If necessary we need an email message that the old application form should be canceled, and you will send a new one.
I was accepted into the further procedure, what do I have to do now?
You are now on the shortlist for the next free room. You will then receive a link from us to a form with which we can request further information. You then have to answer this within a week. Important: Admission to the further procedure is not a binding room confirmation.
I have not yet signed my apprenticeship contract, what do I do now?
If your apprenticeship contract is not yet available, you can alternatively submit a letter of confirmation from your future apprenticing company stating that you will be trained there.
Rental agreement (contract):
Can I get a rental agreement if I do not have an apprenticeship contract but I'm still interviewing?
If you do not have a contract or confirmation from a company, no rental agreement can be made. Your name will be back on the waiting list.
I have submitted all documents: when will the leases be closed?
After we have received and checked all documents from you, we will consider you the next time we allocate rooms. You will usually receive further information after 2-4 weeks. Important: Admission to the further procedure is not a binding room confirmation.
If I cannot transfer the deposit in full: what should I do?
The deposit, as well as the rent, must always be paid in full. If you have a financial shortage, you can get a loan through the Job Centre. Please contact the Youth Job Centre: click here (german only).
Can I choose a room, or will one be assigned to me?
We try to accommodate all wishes. However, it may be in the sense of the apartment composition that we decide otherwise.
Can I choose who I want to share a flat with?
We usually try to consider your wish for a roommate (if you provide us the name). But we may decide otherwise, if the room distribution will not work.
Can you tell me who will share the flat with me (roommate) before signing the rental agreement or before moving in?
Unfortunately, for data protection reasons, we cannot pass on the names and contact details of future roommates.
Can I change rooms after moving in?
This is only possible in justified exceptional cases.
How long is the lease?
The term of lease is always up to the end of your apprenticeship plus 3 months.
How long is the notice period?
In accordance with the German law we have a 3 months’ notice period. You can terminate the lease by the third working day of a calendar month. The lease will then expire the calendar month after next. For example: If you cancel your contract by April 3rd, the lease ends at the end of June.
No, the rent covers all ancillary costs (heating, water, garbage fees etc.), electricity, internet and telephone.
Do I have to pay the German broadcasting fee?
You will not have to pay a broadcasting fee, while residing in the dormitory (normally € 17.50 per room).
I should sign a direct debit authorization or a SEPA direct debit mandate for € 30 / month in the rental agreement. Why?
With your signature you give us the possibility – if necessary – to debit rent arrears of a maximum of 30 euros per month from your account. If you want to buy something from the Azubiwerk Foundation (e.g. a sweater with a print), we can also debit the money from your account. It is not a debit on a regular basis, you only give us permission to debit with prior notice.
